Wellness exams:
There are many medical conditions in dogs and cats that veterinarians have the skills to find before they become obvious to pet owners. When caught early, numerous conditions can be treated before they become painful or life-threatening. This is why we recommend all pets be examined at least once yearly and preferably every 6 months for senior pets.
Deworming:
Virtually all puppies and kittens are brought home with some worms that they have contracted from their mother. These parasites may cause problems for the pet, but more importantly, it is possible for these worms to cause problems in humans.
For this reason, we strongly recommend routine deworming of pets. Your pet’s lifestyle will be evaluated and we will make a recommendation as to how often they need to be dewormed.
Vaccinations:
Vaccinations are more important for preventing deadly diseases such as parvovirus and distemper virus in dogs, and panleukopenia in cats. There are also vaccines available for diseases that are not as lethal but can still make your animal quite ill. Because animals have different lifestyles and levels of risk of contracting various diseases, we assess each patient individually before deciding which vaccines are appropriate.
We recommend rabies vaccination for all pets, since rabies is a fatal disease in humans.
Cat Boarding:
We offer boarding for your feline friend. You'll have peace of mind while leaving your cat in the hands of our pet care professionals for the time that you're away.
Please note that your cat's vaccines must be up-to-date in order to board at our facility.

Dentistry:
We are fully equipped to perform routine dental cleanings and oral surgery. We have a brand new ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar build-up. The finer work is done with hand instruments. We also have a polisher and high-speed drill. Animal Clinic West is also equipped with a dental radiology unit. This allows us to examine any tooth below the gumline and check for infection, pulp damage and other lesions.
Radiology:
We have an on-site modern radiology unit that allows us to take films of extremities, the abdomen, and chest cavity. We have access to a board certified veterinary radiologist to consult on any radiographs taken and assist our veterinarians in a diagnosis.

Surgery:
The veterinarians at Animal Clinic West are experienced in performing a wide range of surgeries. Our most common surgeries are spays (removal of ovaries and uterus) and neuters (removal of testicles). Other common surgeries include umbilical hernia repair, removal of cancerous and non-cancerous masses, surgical removal of bladder stones and removal of objects that pets have swallowed but are too large to pass through the intestines.
If one of our patients requires a very specialized surgery, such as spinal surgery or a very complicated bone repair, we are able to refer to veterinary specialists in Calgary.
Anesthesia:
The veterinarians and staff at Animal Clinic West are very committed to proper pain management and the safest anesthesia protocols possible.
Pharmacy:
We maintain a pharmacy of the most commonly used veterinary medications. Some less commonly used medications can be obtained through human pharmacies. We also use the services of compounding pharmacists who can make some medications in forms that are more acceptable to “fussier” pets. These may include a gel that is put on the skin, or a tasty liquid.
